Our History

Founded in 1964, St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic School has been providing excellence in education to students in Ormond Beach for 60 years. Our school's history is deeply rooted in our commitment to academic excellence, infused in the Catholic faith, and our dedication to nurturing the spiritual, intellectual, and social growth of our students. With a vibrant community of teachers, staff, and families, we continue to build on our rich history and prepare our students to become conscientious leaders of tomorrow.

St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic School opened its doors for children in kindergarten through 4th grade in September 1964. Under the direction of the pastor, Rev. Neil Sager, and principal Sister Mary Noel Dwyer, O.P., the school was staffed by the Dominican Sisters of the Order of Preachers until 1976.

Within a few years, a new building was erected to house students in grades 5th through 8th. In between the two classroom buildings was the administration building, which contained the principal’s and secretary’s offices, a nurse's station, and a teachers’ lounge.

The school population continued to grow throughout the years, and in October 1975, the community converted the old convent building into the school’s Media Center to house an office and library, reference, audio-visual, projection supply, and art rooms, as well as the kindergarten classroom. The parish social hall served as the school cafeteria.

Nearly 20 years later, Father Anthony Silvestri, O.S.F.S. began a major renovation plan, known as Visions 2000, in 1992. This plan encompassed the total and complete renovation of St. Brendan School classrooms. In addition, a Library, Media Center, and Computer Lab were constructed, as well as a state-of-the-art Science Center. The Parish Center was refurbished providing space for Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, Art, and Math classrooms, as well as two Conference Rooms, a Banquet Room, and kitchen facilities. Along with the school's renovation, a Parish/School Administrative Building was constructed.

Throughout the years, St. Brendan graduated students who ultimately found success as leaders of their communities. Today, with more than 200 students enrolled and under the guidance of the pastor, Rev. Tom Barrett, and principal, Phil Gorrasi, St. Brendan continues to serve the Ormond Beach community by offering an exemplary education steeped in the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Who is St. Brendan the Navigator?

St. Brendan is an early Irish monastic saint and one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. Born in Tralee, County Kerry Ireland in AD 484, he was ordained to the priesthood around the age of 26 by Bishop Erc. He also became a monk at Clonfert. St. Brendan was renowned for his voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, leading to his title as the "Navigator." However, despite his maritime exploits, St. Brendan ultimately chose to devote his life to the priesthood. He sought to spread Christianity and founded several monastic communities throughout Ireland. St. Brendan’s commitment to the priesthood reflected his deep faith and desire to serve God and others. Even as a navigator, he saw himself as a servant of God's plan, using his skills and adventurous spirit to bring the message of Christ to remote regions. His example reminds us of the importance of balancing our talents and passions with our calling to a higher purpose, exemplifying the deep connection between his voyages and his religious vocation.St. Brendan's Feast Day is May 16.
